Monthly Archives: January 2017
Please mark on your calendar that Saturday 28 Jan 2017. On this day we will be going for a day Picnic as a fellowship family and friends. We will have fun with lots of games and varieties of delicious food from different people. We will also get to know each other more. We will be meeting at the Lagankhel Bus park at 10 am and leave together by a local Microbus van to Nationational Botanical Garden, Godavari and will be returning by 4 pm from the venue. Please bring your friends and families! So see you all. (If you have any sports items, bring along! There won’t be a service at KIF on that day.)
I keep getting a lot of emails from different sites I just browse through and then delete it but I found this one from Lead Like Jesus by Phyllis Hennecy Hendry very useful for making me think and act. I have taken just as it is from their website and shared here. I hope many of us will be blessed reading her article. God bless her and whole Lead Like Jesus Team.
Have you been pondering what is ahead in 2017? You may be aware of some opportunities and challenges ahead, but you know there will be unexpected ones too.
Joshua knew that too as we read in the opening chapter of the book of Joshua where it says, After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them – to the Israelites.
This verse has always made me pause.
Moses led 2 million plus people out of slavery in Egypt and continued to lead them for forty plus years. Who could follow Moses as a leader? They have now mourned Moses’ death for thirty days and Joshua is then appointed the leader. If this is the only passage you read, it might look like Joshua “suddenly” became a leader. It might seem like he was an overnight sensation! But here is the rest of the story.
Joshua had been an assistant to Moses since his youth. He was 40-years-old when he was part of the duo with Caleb that was sent out to explore the land of Canaan. He encouraged the people to take possession of the land because God had promised it to them. It was noted that Joshua followed the Lord wholeheartedly. He had served Moses faithfully and now a new season of leadership would begin for Joshua.
Reality had been defined: Moses was dead, but there was still work to do; they needed a leader. Joshua was chosen. He was not given a few suggestions at his leadership appointment ceremony. Joshua was given one strong command repeatedly: Be strong and courageous. Joshua had been around long enough to know what was ahead – being strong and courageous might have seemed overwhelming if he looked at his circumstances. But God was so good to tell him the most important thing for him to do in verse 8 when he said: Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Below are four lessons from Joshua that will help make your 2017 more successful no matter the opportunity or challenge. Please read and apply:
Follow the Lord wholeheartedly.
Even as a young man Joshua took God’s Word seriously. He believed the promises of God so much that he was ready to be obedient to do what God said. Joshua did not step away from situations out of fear because he trusted God.
Your heart determines your leadership. It is in the heart where we decide to fear or be courageous. I love the following quotes from my pastor, Richard Smith:
Courage is a duty. It is a duty that is grown in a heart that has learned to trust God.
Fear is a sin. It is a sin that is grown in a heart that has learned to doubt God.
Serve where you are until God changes the assignment.
Joshua had served Moses almost all of his life. He had not only learned what to do through his years of serving Moses, but he had learned why they did it. Joshua had learned to keep the law and now he was appointed to be the leader of a nation – the general in every battle and the leader of the government.
Your current assignment is the sacred ground God has given to you. It doesn’t matter what the task is; you are there on His assignment to do and to be His representative. He is always preparing you for more.
Your current assignment is the sacred ground God has given to you.
Believe God’s promises.
Joshua was given great promises to help him stay strong and courageous. God told him that He would give him every place where his foot stepped and no one would be able to stand against him. God told him that He would be with him and that He would never leave him.
The promises God has made to be with us, to never leave us, to give us the desires of our hearts are just words if we don’t believe them to be true. We can believe those promises and more because Scripture tells us that “no matter how many promises God made, they are “Yes” in Jesus” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Joshua had to believe God’s promises to be strong and courageous and so do you.
Mediate on God’s Word so you will do what it says.
God was clear with Joshua that the way to be ready for the challenges ahead was to know God’s Word so he might understand it and have it ready in him for all situations. It seems that becoming the general of a great nation, serving all the people of that nation, maintaining the work Moses had begun and completing the work might have excused Joshua from studying God’s Word. Joshua had been given a great trust of leadership and mediating on God’s Word was the one thing that God said would make him prosperous and successful.
If meditating on God’s Word would work for Joshua, it will work for you. God’s Word is still your best book on life and leadership. When you spend time meditating on God’s Word, there is a much better chance that you will become more like His Word.
God’s Word is still your best book on life and leadership.
In what ways are your opportunities and challenges like Joshua’s? How will you respond?
